Take back the web

30 11 2005

You probably heard this slogan before, if not, i’m kinda glad you havent.
For those of you who don’t know, this slogan belongs to FireFox, a web-browser. (downloadable at getFirefox.com )

Well… I was at school today, and there are those nifty little laptops that they hand out when we’re doing project work. So we we’re doing a group assignment, and we had to use the web to gather some info. Now, on the laptops there’s both IE (Internet Explorer) and FireFox installed, and used to the old habits, i fire up IE….And the rest of my group just go nuts. “Why the hell did you open IE? USE FIREFOX!!!”

I’m just sitting clueless, thinking what the hell is wrong with them, I begin to explain taht we only had to go to google and enter a search, no big deal. It can be done with any browser. And then the group members just go on wild craze on praising FireFox and how you can customize with extensions and so on.
One of them then takes up his laptop and shows me all the extentions he has installed. I then tell him, i dont need all that stuff. I’ve a firewall at home that blocks ads, i dont like tabbed-browsing, i dont care about a search field, and i dont want to know about the weather in the status bar. I CAN LOOK OUT THE WINDOW FOR THAT.
This kinda went on for a good half hour, and went on to other Microsoft products, and I got ended up with being labeled as a Microsoft bitch, who’s most likely on the payroll of Mr. Gates.

Microsoft Acrylic

29 11 2005

So i downloaded the beta version of Microsofts new paint program.
A little info on it:
The program, called Graphic designer, is in the new Microsoft series called Expression, in the series you’ll be able to get: Graphic Designer, Web Designer and Interactive Designer.
The one i’m looking most forward to is Web Designer. Basically Microsoft have made a whole bunch of new programs (updating their Office to Office 12, Windows Vista, Visual Studio series (express versions are available free to download).
Anywho, i really like their new line of products, and Graphic Designer going under the code name “Acrylic” is pretty nice.
Sure, it’s quite different from what I’m used to with Photoshop, but I’m really in to giving this one a shot. Mainly because it is also based on vecor graphics. (In normal language that would be more smooth edges and lines and so on)
The user interface is very confusing in the beginning, and is still confusing after you’ve worked a bit with it. I really hope that Microsoft will fix this, and make the interface more graphic oriented.
